What This Approach Means in Plain Language

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy is a unique and highly structured therapeutic approach designed to help individuals heal from the symptoms and emotional distress that are the result of disturbing life experiences. When we experience something deeply distressing or traumatic, our brain's natural coping mechanisms can become overwhelmed. As a result, the memory of the event is stored improperly in the brain, along with the intense emotions, physical sensations, and negative beliefs that were present at the time. This is why certain triggers can make you feel as though you are reliving the event, even years later.

EMDR therapy works by engaging the brain's natural information processing system. Through a process called bilateral stimulation—which can involve eye movements, tapping, or auditory tones—EMDR helps the brain reprocess these stuck memories. The goal is not to erase the memory, but rather to change how it is stored. After successful EMDR processing, the memory is still there, but the intense emotional charge and physical reactivity are significantly reduced or eliminated. You are able to remember the event without feeling overwhelmed by it.

At Nuummite Psychotherapy, we understand that carrying the weight of unresolved experiences can be exhausting. Our approach to EMDR therapy in Mississauga is grounded in compassion, safety, and a deep respect for your individual pace. Whether you are seeking support for a recent distressing event or long-standing relational wounds, EMDR offers a pathway to meaningful healing that does not rely solely on talking through the pain.

The Evidence Base

EMDR is not an experimental or fringe approach; it is a widely researched, evidence-based therapy recognized globally for its effectiveness. Major health organizations, including the World Health Organization (WHO), the American Psychiatric Association, and the International Society for Traumatic Stress Studies, endorse EMDR as a first-line treatment for trauma and post-traumatic stress.

Decades of clinical research demonstrate that EMDR can produce significant and lasting reductions in trauma symptoms. Studies show that by facilitating the brain's natural healing processes, EMDR can often achieve results more rapidly than traditional talk therapy. Furthermore, neuroimaging studies have shown observable changes in brain activity following EMDR treatment, particularly in areas associated with memory and emotional regulation. This robust evidence base provides confidence that EMDR is a clinically sound, trauma-informed approach that can facilitate profound and enduring recovery.

What Sessions Look Like

An EMDR session at Nuummite Psychotherapy looks quite different from a standard counselling session. The process is divided into eight distinct phases, and we move through them collaboratively.

We begin with history-taking and preparation. During this time, we discuss your background and identify the specific memories, triggers, or negative beliefs you want to address. A crucial part of this early stage is ensuring you have a strong toolkit of grounding and emotional regulation skills. We will not begin processing traumatic memories until you feel stable and equipped to manage distressing emotions.

When we move into the assessment and processing phases, I will ask you to bring a specific memory to mind, along with the negative belief and physical sensations associated with it. You will then engage in bilateral stimulation—typically by following my fingers back and forth with your eyes, or by using tapping. After a short set of bilateral stimulation, I will ask you to let your mind go blank and simply notice whatever thought, feeling, image, or physical sensation comes up.

We do not spend time analyzing these responses; we simply notice them and continue with another set of bilateral stimulation. This process continues until the memory no longer elicits distress. We then work to install a positive, adaptive belief about yourself in relation to the memory. Throughout the entire process, you are awake, alert, and in control. Whether we are working together through in-person therapy in Mississauga or you are joining for virtual therapy across Ontario, the structure and safety of the session remain our highest priority.

Who Benefits Most

EMDR therapy is highly beneficial for individuals who feel stuck in the past, despite their best efforts to move forward. If you find that you intellectually understand your experiences but still feel a strong emotional or physical reaction when reminded of them, EMDR can be particularly helpful. It bridges the gap between what you know logically and what you feel in your body.

This approach is well-suited for those who may find it difficult or re-traumatizing to talk extensively about the details of their distressing experiences. Because EMDR focuses on the brain's processing rather than detailed narrative recounting, it can be a gentler option for many.

However, EMDR is not the right fit for everyone at every stage of their journey. Because the processing phases can bring up intense emotions, it requires a foundation of emotional stability. If you are currently experiencing severe dissociation, active substance dependence, or are in an acute crisis, we may need to focus on stabilisation and grounding techniques first. If you are in immediate distress, please reach out to the 9-8-8 Suicide Crisis Helpline at 9-8-8. Our goal is always to ensure that the therapy we provide is safe, appropriate, and aligned with your current capacity.

How Long Treatment Takes

The duration of EMDR therapy varies significantly from person to person. For individuals dealing with a single, isolated traumatic event—such as a car accident or a specific injury—EMDR can sometimes resolve the distress in a relatively short number of sessions.

However, for individuals who have experienced complex, repeated, or developmental trauma (such as childhood abuse or long-term relational difficulties), the process will naturally take longer. In these cases, we often need to spend more time in the preparation phase, building trust and developing robust coping strategies before we begin processing memories.

It is also important to note that EMDR is not a race. We proceed at a pace that feels manageable for you. Some sessions may be dedicated entirely to processing, while others may focus on grounding, discussing current life stressors, or integrating the insights gained from previous processing. During our initial consultation and ongoing check-ins, we will discuss your progress and adjust our timeline as needed.

Quick Answers

Clinical Summary

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a widely researched and internationally recognized therapeutic approach. It is endorsed by major health organizations, including the World Health Organization (WHO) and the American Psychiatric Association, as an effective treatment for trauma and post-traumatic stress. Extensive clinical studies demonstrate that EMDR can significantly reduce the emotional distress associated with traumatic memories. Unlike traditional talk therapy, EMDR focuses on the brain's information processing system, helping to reprocess unresolved memories so they no longer trigger intense emotional or physical responses. This evidence-based approach provides a structured, trauma-informed pathway to healing.

Clinical Summary

An EMDR session at Nuummite Psychotherapy looks different from traditional talk therapy. We begin with a thorough preparation phase, ensuring you have the coping skills and emotional resources needed to feel grounded. When you are ready, we identify a specific distressing memory or belief to focus on. During the processing phase, you will follow my fingers, a light bar, or use tapping (bilateral stimulation) while briefly focusing on the memory. You do not need to describe the event in detail. We pause frequently to check in on what you are noticing—whether it is a thought, feeling, or physical sensation. The goal is to allow your brain to process the memory until it no longer feels emotionally charged or overwhelming.

Clinical Summary

EMDR therapy is highly beneficial for individuals who feel stuck in past traumatic experiences, whether from a single distressing event or ongoing relational trauma. It is particularly effective for those experiencing intrusive memories, heightened anxiety, or a strong physical response to triggers. If you find that traditional talk therapy has not fully resolved the emotional weight of your experiences, EMDR may offer a different pathway to healing. However, EMDR requires a certain level of emotional stability. If you are currently experiencing severe dissociation, active crisis, or overwhelming instability, we may need to focus on grounding and stabilisation approaches first before beginning the active processing phases of EMDR.

EMDR Therapy FAQs

No, one of the benefits of EMDR therapy is that you do not need to describe the traumatic event in detail. The process focuses on how the memory is stored in your brain and body, allowing you to heal without having to recount every distressing aspect of the experience.

Yes, EMDR therapy can be effectively delivered through virtual therapy across Ontario. We use specialized software or self-tapping methods for bilateral stimulation. Virtual sessions offer the same structured approach as our in-person therapy in Mississauga, allowing you to process experiences from the comfort of your own space.

You remain fully awake, alert, and in control throughout the entire EMDR session. You can stop the process at any time by using a pre-arranged stop signal. My role as your therapist is to guide and support you, ensuring you feel safe and grounded during our work together.

While EMDR is widely known for treating post-traumatic stress, it is also highly effective for a range of other concerns. We frequently use this approach to support individuals experiencing anxiety, panic attacks, phobias, grief, and deeply ingrained negative beliefs about themselves, such as feeling unworthy or unlovable.
